Although chemical dependency does not discriminate between genders, women do have special needs in recovery. By addressing these needs, women can increase their chances for long-term recovery.

Women entering treatment with Chestnut can expect to have an individualized treatment plan with a female therapist; special recreational activities that are life-enhancing and interesting to women; several women-only counseling groups that allow deeper exploration of issues specific to women, such as dependent relationships, motherhood, sexuality and self-image; and educational groups that focus on domestic violence, eating disorders, addictive relationships, and parenting. The women's residential program provides a comfortable, attractive living area separate from the men's living quarters and referral and transportation to women's AA and NA groups.

Chestnut is also a Project SAFE provider. Project SAFE is an acronym for Substance and Alcohol Free Environment. This program is aimed at providing intervention, diagnosis and treatment of substance-abusing mothers. In addition to chemical dependency treatment, this program provides women with extensive outreach services and parenting training. Women must be referred by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services or a Purchaser of Services agency, be 18 or older, and meet specific DCFS criteria. Please contact us for more information.

Chestnut Health Systems gives priority treatment to pregnant women and women referred by DCFS.
