Dynamic Youth Community (DYC) is a 3-year multistage, modified therapeutic community that serves adolescents and young adults ages 13 to 21 with severe substance use problems—often related to cocaine and heroin use. Adolescents begin the program at a residential center in upstate New York and transition after 1 year to a day treatment center in New York City, where they complete the program’s Day Treatment, Re-Entry, and Phase-Ambulatory program stages. Because adolescent drug use affects the entire family, parents/guardians are required to participate in DYC’s parent program, which meets weekly for the duration of the adolescent’s tenure in treatment. All four stages of adolescent treatment and the corresponding parent program are discussed in detail. Staffing information, therapeutic community methods, the program’s history, and a glossary and index are included. Quotations from adolescents and parents who participated in the program are interspersed throughout the manual to provide insight into adolescents’ treatment experiences. The manual includes the following:

  • Group Therapy
  • Stratified Peer-Based Community Techniques
  • Work Crews and Work Therapy
  • Individual Interventions
  • Behavioral Modification
  • Daily Living Skills
  • Scholastic and Job Skills
  • Seminars and Activities
