Instruments

  • Project-Specific Versions and Materials - if you are using a GAIN instrument with formal support from Chestnut (paid directly by your agency or a funder), use this link to go to the logon screen and see the specific versions/materials relevant to your project.
  • GAIN Short Screener (GAIN-SS) Materials - 2-page (5 minute) version for screening in a general population to quickly identify who is likely to have an internal, external, or substance use diagnosis.
  • GAIN-Quick (GAIN-Q) Materials - 11-15 page (15-20 minute) version for a basic assessment of a targeted population (e.g. EAP, SAP, DCFS, CJ, JJ) that is designed to identify the eligibility and need for referral to specialty health, mental health, and/or substance use systems, and/or to support motivational interviewing related to substance use.
  • GAIN-Initial (GAIN-I) Materials - 61-100 page (60-120 minute) version designed to provide a standardized bio-psychosocial assessment for people presenting to a substance abuse treatment using DSM-IV for diagnosis, ASAM for placement, and needing to meet common (CARF, JCAHO, insurance, CDS/TEDS, Medicaid, CSAT, NIDA) requirements for assessment, diagnosis, placement, treatment planning, performance/outcome monitoring, economic analysis, and program planning, and to support referral/communications with other systems.
  • GAIN Treatment Satisfaction Index (GAIN-TxSI) Materials - 1 page (3 minute) measure of working alliance and engagement.
  • GAIN-Monitoring 90 Day (GAIN-M90) Materials - the quarterly follow-up version of the GAIN-I instrument for evaluating change over time.
  • GAIN-Quick Monitoring (GAIN-QM) Materials - a 4 page quarterly follow-up version of the GAIN-Q instrument for evaluating change over time.
  • GAIN Archive - Download any of the versions of the GAIN-I, GAIN-M, and their QxQ specifications, as well as other GAIN-related documents.

Supporting psychometrics, crosswalks, scales, and naming conventions

GAIN Preliminary Psychometrics - Preliminary tables on the psychometrics of the GAIN including adult norms from the Early Re-Intervention (ERI-2) study for adults and the CSAT Adolescent Treatment 2006 data for adolescents. A second file presents initial differences for adult and adolescent clients in outpatient, intensive outpatient, methadone and inpatient programs from the Drug Outcome Monitoring Study (DOMS).

GAIN-I Scales and Variables - A listing of the major scales and indices from the Global Appraisal of Individual Needs-Intake including scale name, variable name, time period, GAIN-I items used, number of items, pages, scale type and cut points, purpose, short description, interpretation, references, syntax, full text items and additional comments. Includes a similar listing of additional created variables for use in reports, and a listing of GPRA items. Also now includes a list of scales by purpose and separate tabs for scales/indices, substance related variables and other additional variables.

GAIN-Q Scales and Variables - Following the format of the GAIN-I Scales and Variables, this is a listing of the major scales and indices from the Global Appraisal of Individual Needs-Quick including scale name, variable name, time period, GAIN-I items used, number of items, pages, scale type and cut points, purpose, short description, interpretation, references, syntax, full text items and additional comments. Includes a similar listing of additional created variables for use in reports and references specific to the GAIN-Q.

Naming Conventions - For files and items, scales, and indices on the GAIN instruments and corresponding variables within SPSS datasets. Missing value codes are also included.

Crosswalk of GAIN Items - An Excel spreadsheet listing each GAIN item or scale with information about its status as a CORE item, a Study specific CORE item, a Treatment/Clinical item (non-CORE), or a Recommended item (non-CORE), as well as information regarding the purpose for/source of the item and any comments regarding its use.  This file also includes a tab for sites to indicate which non-CORE items they plan to use.

GAIN Data Base Specification and Question by Question (QxQ) Specifications  Lists the data base and question by question specifications for the various versions of the GAIN-I and GAIN-M.

Rasch Analysis of the Behavioral Complexity Scale - This report provides a brief psychometric analysis of the Behavioral Complexity Scale using the Rasch measurement model.

Rasch Analysis of the Crime and Violence Scale - This report provides a brief psychometric analysis of the Crime and Violence Scale using the Rasch measurement model.

Rasch Analysis of the Internal Mental Distress Scale - This report provides a brief psychometric analysis of the Internal Mental Distress Scale using the Rasch measurement model.
