The use of manuals to guide substance abuse treatment for adolescents is desirable from the perspective of therapists as well as from the perspective of program administrators and evaluators. The La Caņada Adolescent Substance Abuse Step-Down Treatment Model offers adolescent treatment providers an innovative program model, which begins with a 30-day residential component, continues with a 60-day intensive outpatient phase, and concludes with a 60-day non-intensive outpatient phase. The La Caņada program uses an integrated treatment model that combines traditional psychiatric and milieu approaches with systems theory and interventions. The manual includes information on the following topics:

  • Administrative issues
  • Structured daily living
  • Health-related seminars and activities
  • Individual, group, and family therapy
  • Case management
  • Troubleshooting techniques
  • Treatment environment
  • Psycho-educational activities
  • Level and point system
  • Recreational activities
  • Pro-social community involvement
  • Evaluation efforts
