GROWING UP WELL (2ND EDITION)

This kindergarten through eighth grade substance abuse prevention curriculum focuses on a positive, health promotion approach. Growing Up Well provides age appropriate information and experiences to children in the lower grades and continues to build on the information through new experiences and reinforcements through grade eight.

In the second edition of Growing Up Well, student participation is emphasized in the many new activities. The dangers of drug and alcohol abuse are addressed earlier, and a larger section is dedicated to education and prevention of inhalant use. The messages of self-esteem, self-responsibility, and sound decision-making are stressed throughout the curriculum.

The primary grades use illustrative stories and puppets to supplement the basic curriculum. Although each grade level has its own objectives, the curriculum is divided into three distinct sections: Kindergarten - 3rd ("I Can Choose"), 4th - 6th ("I Have the Power"), and 7th - 8th ("I Can Do It").

Growing Up Well is effective, easy to use, emphasizes a positive approach to learning, teaches students to take responsibility for healthy behaviors, encourages parent/volunteer involvement and has a flexible format.

Each curriculum kit contains a teaching manual and support materials, including display cards, handouts, quizzes, games, a teacher's evaluation and a film list. The K-3 kit includes one sample coloring book per grade and four puppets. A preview kit is available at no cost.
