Chairs:
  • Paula Riggs M.D., University of Colorado School of Medicine

SUMMARY: The Society of Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Effectiveness (SASATE) was founded in 2002 and has met at CPDD since then, encouraging an increase in posters, presentations, symposia and workshops on adolescent treatment outcomes. This year's SASATE workshop examines the ways in which recent neuro-scientific advances can be utilized to further enhance the development or refinement of prevention, treatment, and relapse prevention interventions for adolescents with substance use disorders (SUD).

  • Dr. Tapert will report on how neurocognition moderates coping skills and adolescents' propensity to relapse. Dr. Tapert will also present on neurobiological differences in fMRI brain activation patterns related to decision making as predictors of treatment outcome at one year follow up in methamphetamine dependence
  • Dr.Thompson will present results of a pilot study evaluating changes in fMRI brain activation patterns in 10 depressed, cannabis dependent adolescents presented with drug-related "cannabis craving" stimuli at baseline and after 16 weeks' of treatment with CBT and pharmacotherapy. Subjects were participants in a larger randomized controlled trial of fluoxetine/placebo + CBT.
  • Dr. Riggs will report data from a randomized controlled trial of fluoxetine/placebo + CBT in depressed, substance dependent adolescents, on the relationship between change in salivary cortisol and serotonin before and after 16 weeks of treatment.
  • Dr. Nora Volkow, the Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) will serve as discussant .
  • Dr. Dennis will lead SASATE membership in a brief business meeting following the research presentations.
