We live in increasingly violent times. Our children are continually exposed to senseless acts of violence through films, video, television, games, and the evening news. Sometimes young people believe that violent acts are appropriate responses to everyday events and lash out at others with words, fists or weapons.

To help decrease these events, we have done several things. First, we have trained all our SAP staff in the Second Step violence prevention program, a nationally recognized method of helping students understand that violence is never the answer. We currently implement Second Step programming in many of our area schools. Second, we have partnered with Olympia School District to provide a Violence Prevention Specialist at Olympia High School and Middle School. His presence has had significant impact on acts of violence performed by students. Third, we frequently conduct community presentations on topics related to violence and how parents and school staff can recognize students who may have violent potential, plus how to intervene to possibly prevent a tragedy.
