Youth involved in substance abuse often experience emotional and behavioral conditions serious enough to warrant specialized intervention and treatment. Through our experience of treating youth in the justice system, we have found that substance abusing youth often also have serious emotional illness. Many youth who have experienced significant loss, abuse, trauma, and interpersonal violence in their lives develop post-traumatic stress disorders. A certified child and adolescent psychiatrist assists the Chestnut treatment team with assessment, clinical consultation and medical management of depression, anxiety, attachment disorder, conduct disorder, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and other serious conditions.
